Metrópolis: Henrique Oliveira

HENRIQUE OLIVEIRA: Hi, I am Henrique Oliveira. I am 35, a painter, and I was born in Ourinhos, a town in the state of São Paulo. Now you will see a little bit of my work.

REPORTER: Although Henrique Oliveira is a young artist, he is already known for his unique, personal style. He is innovative not only in the structure of his works, but also in the material he uses – he has gone beyond the limits of the canvas. Instead of paint he has created works of art using scraps of wood veneer.

HO: I use painting as a guide for a spatial construction, like the work you see now. I collect wood in the streets, take it to my studio, and color the pieces so that later I can assemble a sculpture where the scraps of wood work in the same way as layers of paint would work in a painting.

R: The forms created by Henrique Oliveira are amazing. Take for example, Whirlwind for Turner, which Henrique installed in the British Brazilian Center (São Paulo) last year. With scraps of wood veneer he recreated the painting Snow Storm* by British painter William Turner.

HO: I always listen to music while I work. I like punk rock when I am working with wood scraps and material collected in the streets. I listen to the “classics,” like Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash – bands from the ‘70s and ‘80s.

R: The layering of wood in Oliveira’s sculpture is repeated when he paints. He layers different paints onto canvas lying on the floor, applying color with a brush.

HO: While painting, I love to listen to music from the ‘60s and ‘70s – psychedelic sounds like Jimi Hendrix. I think that in the distortions created with his guitar, one can visualize the sound, and I express this vision in my paintings by using wide brush strokes, where you can observe the movement of the artist’s body.

R: Henrique Oliveira shows his work at Galeria Baró in São Paulo and also here at Metrópolis.
