About Rice Gallery

Campus map

Rice Gallery presents one kind of art: installation. Five times a year, we invite an artist to create a single work of art that transforms our space. When you walk into Rice Gallery, you enter the art and move through it.

Rice Gallery funds the artist's creative process from start to finish, and installations here can become a turning point in an artist's career. Young artists have the opportunity to expand their processes into well-developed, large-scale works, while mid-career and established artists can "fine-tune" their ideas and methods, or try something new. Rice Gallery artists do a lot with a little. Typically they use inexpensive materials to create stunning works of art.

Since 1995, Rice Gallery has commissioned more than forty installations. It is a nationally recognized contemporary art space enjoyed by almost 40,000 visitors annually, and it is celebrated among artists as "a great place to show." As the only university venue in the country dedicated to installation art, the gallery brings to the university campus and Houston a unique art experience.
