Mary Temple explores the experiential qualities of specific environments through installations in which light and shadows seem to be cast on walls from nearby windows, despite the absence of a natural light source. In 2010 she was the recipient of a Basil H. Alkazzi Award for Excellence in Painting, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting, and
The Saint-Gaudens Memorial Fellowship.

An early example of installation art, Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau will be recreated at The Menil Collection and open to the public next week. In an article discussing the exhibition, Houston Chronicle’s Douglas Britt writes, “It’s fitting that this partial re-creation of Schwitters’ seminal work should make its first U.S. appearance in Houston, which is home to the only U.S. university museum [Rice Gallery] devoted solely to the art form the Merzbau anticipated.”

Nineteen students participating in Writers in the Schools Summer Creative Writing Workshop met at Rice Gallery on June 22 to take inspiration from its current installation, Sometimes in My Dreams I Fly by Andrea Dezsö. The students plunged into the imaginative space, studying Andrea Dezsö’s colorful cast of space characters, and writing their own poems in response.
Rice Gallery and the Rice School of Architecture recently collaborated to present the design workshop Wormholes through the Curtain Wall, held at Rice Gallery 16-18 June 2010. Thirteen generous donors made possible a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for eight architecture students to participate in the workshop led by Sarah Oppenheimer.
